The idea is tokenless, on-device AI. The model lives on the device, the inference happens on the device, and nothing gets shipped to the cloud. No tokens burned, no meter running. New handhelds like the TC501 and 701 ship with built-in neural processing units, so they’re starting to look like the laptops we carry every day.
The timing makes the point for itself. That same week, Uber and Microsoft both pulled back on AI spending because token costs were wrecking budgets. So tokenless on-device AI stops being a nice-to-have and starts looking like the only sane way to scale frontline AI.
Here’s our take. Tokenless on-device AI wins on three fronts at once. Cost, security, and speed. You can’t run a frontline workflow on a three second cloud round trip, and you shouldn’t have to pay per token to find out.
This clip is from our bonus episode on Zebra ZONE 2026, where we break down the frontline AI announcements that actually matter.
